Album with approximately 105 images, most of India, and several photographs of Burma, and a few of Afghanistan and Spain.
The album comprises mainly photographs of Indian temples and palaces, but also magnificent gates, mosques, and mausoleums. Alongside traditional views of the Indian cityscape, such as Benares and Bombay, the album showcases architectural elements of minarets, massive halls, and gateways, as well as a plethora of ornamental interiors, such as sculptural ceilings, columns, and wall paintings. The architectural style shows a beautiful amalgamation of Hindu, Persian, and Islamic elements as typical of the Mughal style, but there are also a few examples of Buddhist architecture from Myanmar. The famous monuments depicted include Qaisar Bagh, Lucknow, in the Awadh region of India, the Akbar's Tomb, Sikandra, Agra, and Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as Golden Pagoda, located in Yangon, Myanmar. Finally, remains of the Islamic influence are also illustrated with photographs of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, as typical of traditional Islamic architectural style with details pertaining to the East, including geometric patterns and column arcades. Albumen prints, the images measuring approximately 8½x11 inches (21.6x27.9cm.), and slightly smaller, and the reverse, mounted recto/verso, some with negative numbers on print recto, and each with captions in pencil and some with a date and negative number, also in pencil, on the mount. Oblong folio, gilt-lettered leather, worn. Circa 1886-91
