(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) MARYLAND. Manumission and emancipation certificate for Margaret Tillison. Partially Printed document, accomplished by hand, on a sheet of soft vellum, folded into eighths; some soil and blurring of a few letters, but readable and understandable in context. Maryland, 1831

Additional Details

A complex document, wherein the original slave owner testifies that he was the owner of Margaret, the person named on this manumission and deed of emancipation. It is printed on soft vellum, and the person to whom it refers has folded the document up in to as small an item as possible, to be secreted on her person. This was done as an insurance policy. In case she was seized by a slaver/kidnapper, she could eventually produce the document and be free. This did not always work as well as one might hope, but in order to avoid a fate like that of Solomon Northup, a document like this could offer protection.
