Additional Details

Mr. John Mason writes to John A. Washington asking that he be granted a warrant to be able to search the homes of a long list of people, obviously sympathetic to the slaves' cause. After listing a half dozen individuals by name, Mason says that perhaps just a blanket warrant might be better. Imagine, giving this man the power to invade anyone's home in the middle of the night if he or she were suspected of harboring runaway slaves. Slave patrols and harsher laws regarding blacks, whether they were slave or free, came about after the Nat Turner rebellion of 1831.
