CORNELIUS M. BATTEY (1873 - 1927) Booker T. Washington. Silver print, circa 1908. 235x171 mm; 9 1/4x6 3/4 inches. With the artist's stamp, "C.M. Battey, Tuskegee Inst., Ala., Copyrighted," in the negative, lower right. Washington founded Tuskegee Institute in 1881 as a place to educate African Americans in industrial and mechanical training. He died in 1915, one year before Battey become the head of the institute's first photography department. Estimate $2,000-3,000
