        WALTER WILLIAMS (1920 - 1988)
        Bit of Summer #1.

        Oil on canvas board, 1963. 280x254 mm; 11x10 inches. Signed, titled, dated and inscribed "Mexico" in pencil, verso.

        Provenance: private collection.

        Walter Williams painted this work during his last year living in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. He lived here for four years, with the help of a $1,500 award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters and sales from work sent to Roko Gallery in New York. He returned to the U.S. only briefly in 1963 before moving on to Copenhagen the next year. Hanks pp. 13-14.
