This remarkable newspaper's lead story shows some of the consequences of a strike undertaken by the linotype operators. The newspaper's response to the strike introduced delays in the production process, which prevented breaking news from being properly set--explaining the sloppy typewriter text--and which, on the night of the election, encouraged the editors to rely upon early polls. When the polls projecting a Dewey win proved false after the edition had already begun delivery, an attempt was made to recover the copies with the erroneous headline, but some, like the present copy, remained with customers.
