        HENRY CLAY (1777-1852)
        Half-plate daguerreotype of the American statesman Henry Clay, the founder and leader of the Whig Party.
        In a leather case (separated at hinge). 1850

        Clay was known as "The Great Compromiser" because of his success in brokering agreements on the slavery issue. Although his multiple attempts at the presidency failed, he defined the issues of the Second Party system. In 1957 a Senate committee chaired by a young John F. Kennedy named Clay as one of the five greatest senators in American history.
