        DR. SEUSS. [THEODOR GEISEL.]
"A Gentle Sport, Forsooth." Published in Judge Magazine, April 14, 1929, with their stamps and notations on verso. Ink, watercolor, wash, and correction fluid on paper. 286x356 mm; 11 1/4x14 inches. Signed in lower right image. Pencil tracings evident, a few archival repairs. Adhered to window matte with archival tape on verso which also contains a mounted clipping of the printed cartoon.

        Estimate $8,000 - 12,000

A fantastical and humorous drawing of a bemused dragon entrapping a distressed damsel (a wooden puppet) in his hooves. She is apparently about to be rescued by a rather stunned knight riding a Seuss-tastically armored horse who has just caught the dragon's gaze as they gallop atop his back. Seuss had colored the knight blue in this drawing, though the cartoon was published uncolored and in a diminutive size of 2 1/2x3 inches in the magazine. A wonderful, large, and detailed early Seuss drawing.
