      • Sale 2450 Lot 36

(CHARLESTON.) Des Barres, Joseph Frederick Wallet. A Sketch of the Operations Before Charlestown the Capital of South Carolina. Large engraved chart on two sheets of laid paper joined, each bearing "JBates" watermark. 42 1/4x31 1/4 inches sheet size; original hand-color; lightly darkened from early varnishing, upper margin expertly reinstated, few small repairs within image, the letter C of Charleston in the main plan at center damaged, archivally lined on verso. [London, 1780]

        Estimate $8,000 - 12,000

One of Des Barres' most desirable charts and a rarity of early Charleston mapping. The large chart depicts a barely developed city surrounded by farmland with an inset showing the general harbor and entrance to the Cooper and Ashley Rivers. An extensive key describes the positions of troops, fortifications and vessels present during the siege which signified a major success for the British and a devastating defeat for the Americans during the Revolutionary War. Stevens 164C with imprint erased below scale.
