        HELLER, HELEN WEST. Migratory Urge. Introduction by Llewellyn Jones. 57 pages of woodcut plates and verse. 130x195 mm; 5 1/4x7 1/2 inches. Small 8vo, original cream wrappers with decorated woodcut cover label, extremities lightly toned, spine ends worn; remnants of glassine wrapper, otherwise a lovely copy of a scarce title.         number 83 of 109 copies numbered and signed by heller. ex-collection kathleen blackshear with her ownership stamp on front endpaper. Printed on Spanish hand-made paper at the Hogarth Press, Chicago. An important early work by Heller, a pioneer of American graphic art who was not formally trained and who favored bold, abstract designs. Her success in poetry encouraged her to create Migratory Urge, a beautiful marriage of words and images. Blackshear, who attended and then taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, was an important modernist American artist best known for depicting the African American experience.
