KEERE, PIETER VAN DEN. Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula a Pet. Kaerio. Double-page engraved map of the world on Mercator's projection surrounded on four sides by decorative panels representing the four elements and four seasons in allegory, seven planets as classical gods, and seven wonders of ancient architecture. 18 3/4x21 1/4 inches sheet size, margins wide at top and bottom, narrow at left and right, Dutch text on verso; original hand-color; minor surface soiling and foxing in margins, early strengthening to verso of lower center fold. Amsterdam: Jansson, 1608 [but circa 1630]

        Estimate $8,000 - 12,000

A fine example of this wonderfully decorative world map from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography in original hand-color. Appreciated for its cartes-a-figures design and style, the map is a "skillful copy" (Shirley) of Willem Blaeu's world map of 1606, with little changed save for the addition of several descriptive legends, including Arctic information and a belief that the Straits of Anian and Davis connect to form the potential of a Northwest Passage. This is the fourth state of Keere's engraving, with Jansson's imprint but undated. Shirley 264.
