SULLIVAN, ARTHUR. Group of three Autograph Letters Signed and a Letter Signed, each to "Dear Klein" or "My dear Klein," promising to send details about his new opera [Ivanhoe], expressing doubt that they would open on the 17th [Haddon Hall], and mentioning his support of a Masonic lodge candidate. Together 6 pages, each 8vo, most on personal stationery; 1890 letter toned at left edge, horizontal fold. (MRS) [London or Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat], 1890-97

        Estimate $1,000 - 1,500

19 December 1890, LS: ". . . I have many good friends in the Press and I should not like to show an invidious distinction so that I must ask you to wait for a few days, . . . then I shall be able to give you some interesting details about my new opera."
11 January 1891: ". . . [I]f you always use information confided to you with as much discretion, good taste, & gracefulness, as you show in today's paper, you need never fear any 'mystery' or 'secrecy' in musical affairs that I may be concerned in."
2 September 1892: ". . . We are struggling for the 17th but between you and me I don't think we can possibly get it out at that date. [D'Oyly?] Carte thinks we can, but [Augustus?] Harris & I know we can't. You may therefore reckon on the 24th . . . ."
4 April 1897: ". . . I wrote to Lord Lathom, who is an old friend of mine and as you know, very high in the Masonic world, telling him also that I had a friend in the running whom I wanted to back. . . . [H]is answer . . . shows that both you and I can take a back seat! . . ."
