        (MEXICO--BAJA CALIFORNIA.) Felipe V, King of Spain. Royal order to colonize California. Autograph Letter Signed "Yo el Rey" to Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, 10th Duke of Albuquerque, as Viceroy of New Spain. 2 manuscript pages on one leaf, 11 3/4 x 8 inches; worn on top and left edges with slight loss of text, several small ink burns in the lower half. Madrid, 13 August 1705

        The King of Spain orders the Viceroy to continue the colonization of the Californias which had begun in earnest in 1697, and requests a report from the missionary Juan Maria de Salvatierra, who had returned to Mexico from the Loreto mission the previous year.
