      • Sale 2464 Lot 107

(KANSAS.) Whitman, E.B.; and Searl, A.D. Map of Eastern Kansas. Hand-colored lithographed pocket map. 27 1/4x21 inches; folding into original 12mo format gilt-stamped green cloth covers; impeccably preserved. Boston: J.P. Jewett and Co, 1856

        Estimate $1,500 - 2,500

A nearly flawless example of this rare emigrant map. The expanse of the Eastern Kansas territory on a scale of 8 miles to an inch is unsettled with only rivers, roads, and few existing towns and trading posts shown; the town of Lawrence is in a red circle marked with an American Flag; Indian reservations are demarcated with hand-coloring. An inset of Fort Riley on the "Government Reservation" appears in the lower left corner, with images of the Ruins of Eldridge House, Lawrence, Kansas; Constitution Hall, Topeka, Kansas; and Eldridge House, Lawrence, Kansas along the lower border. The intent of the wide-open map was to appeal to Free Soil settlers and speculators with its potential for prosperity. This is furthered by a printed broadside notice from Whitman and Searl pasted inside the front cover, promoting their land business and offering emigrants full services of providing the latest information, surveys and assistance in purchasing property. Heaston, Kansas Pocket Maps 4; Streeter Sale 3903; Rumsey 3069.
