This muster roll is headed "A role of the 4th Company in the 14th Regiment of Militia in the State of Connecticut." It lists 65 enlisted men, plus several others who were crossed out. A few were marked as excused for various reasons: "selectman," "lame," "state service," "schoolmaster," and the like. At this late date in the war, Yorktown had all but ended the active combat. The Continental regiments were still encamped at Hudson Highlands, NY and Morristown, NJ, but most state militia units like this were probably only convened for monthly drills as they were in peacetime. This regiment was drawn from the 5 towns in Connecticut's rural northwestern corner; several of the names appear in other records for the town of Cornwall, CT. On verso is a shorter 6-man "Alarm list, 6th Aug't 1782."
