Classic history of the Civil War, extra-illustrated with more than 380 plates and manuscripts, including signatures and letters by many notable figures. These include autograph letters by Benson Lossing, John G. Wool, Nathaniel P. Banks, P.G.T. Beauregard, Montgomery Meigs, Hamilton Fish, Braxton Bragg, Cassius Clay, Dorothea Dix, William Whipple, Erasmus Keyes, and Winfield Scott Hancock, among others. Individual signatures present include Robert E. Lee, Jubal Early, James Longstreet, Phil Sheridan, William T. Sherman, John Bell Hood, D.E. Farragut, John C. Fremont, Joseph Johnston, W.S. Rosencrans, Charles Sumner, Jefferson Davis, and Sam Houston. There are also two albumen photographs present, one of them showing a cavalryman with his horse at Camp Dennison, the other a handsome portrait of Sherman. Some of the manuscripts are war-dated. William Whipple's autograph includes manuscript orders written from Fort Monroe, VA, in September 1861. A note signed by Silas Casey grants an official pass to Col. James B. McKean, dated January 1862. A letter written by A.A. Humphreys from Gen. Tyler's headquarters concerns the appointment of the quartermaster for the regiment. A note written by Maj. Gen. S.A. Hurlbut from headquarters at Jackson reads: "Mr. Song's complaint & statement as to the occupation of his house for military & hospital purposes is respectfully referred to Col. C.C. Marsh commanding the Post." Other letters of note are a letter written from Gustavus W. Smith to Beauregard at New Orleans making an introduction; a letter written by Quincy Gillmore about the expense of fortifying Alcatraz Island, dated 1857; and a letter from John G. Parker to John P. Nicholson concerning a Civil War "encampment & reunion" dated 1899. A complete listing of the contents is available upon request.
