Additional Details

Scarce mid-nineteenth century Japanese edict board forbidding the practice of Christianity. The display of these public decrees emphasizing the dangers of foreign ideas was put to an end in 1875 by the new Meiji government.

together with: A 120-page manuscript reporting the events of the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637-38. 2 volumes. 11 1/2x8 inches, cord-stitched; various soiling and staining. Kanbun 12 (1672). This early manuscript describes the events of the unsuccessful Christian rebellion against the Shogunate and includes a double-page map of the Siege of Hara Castle.
