(JAPAN.) Ino Tadataka (after). Nihon Koku Gunzu. [Manuscript atlas]. 74 double-page ink and watercolor maps. 2 volumes. Small 4to format, 10 3/4x7 3/4 inches, original stitched silk wrappers with manuscript titles to upper covers, light wear with a small amount of worm tracking. Japan, circa 1840

Additional Details

The present volumes of superbly hand-drawn regional maps of Japan are very similar to those appearing in "Kokugun Zenzu", an atlas published in 1837 based on the surveys of Ino Tadataka. In that title a general map of Japan is included, collecting a total of 75 maps. The present bound group of 74 can here be considered complete, being offered together with: a separate large contemporary manuscript map of Japan on 4 sheets of thin paper joined. 26 1/2x38 inches overall; backed on heavier stock at an early time, minimal worming.
