Additional Details

A fascinating illustrated album showing a large number of scenes of Japanese occupations (makers of masks, swords, scallop diver), shops (medicine, biscuit, paper, chow chow, silk cord), ceremonies (sake, tea), societal practices (prisons and executions) and pastimes (fireworks, aquarium, chess). Several images show the instances of destructive fires and rescues. The inside front cover bears a handwritten gift inscription to a William Sangster. Esq, London, from a likely fellow Englishman, Josiah Furniss, from Yokohama, Japan, dated February 1872.
