Additional Details

Samuel Smith (1714-1785) of Topsfield, MA is best known to history as the great-grandfather of LDS founder Joseph Smith; he also served on the Topsfield Committee of Correspondence and chaired a meeting on the tea crisis in 1773 shortly after the Boston Tea Party. Offered here is a highway tax book for Topsfield: a 6-page list of names and tax assessments; a one-page explanation of the list signed by Samuel Smith and 4 other Topsfield assessors on 30 May 1773; and a 2-page order to highway surveyor Eleazar Lake to complete the labor by 15 November, signed again by Smith and the same 4 other assessors. The front page bears the notation "Eleazar Lake's list," suggesting that it was retained as the personal property of the surveyor.
