Additional Details

Finely illustrated Japanese manuscript report concerning the First Opium War between China and Britain. Sketches include the King of England, British warships, military engagements, plundering, raping of Chinese women and finally a signing of the war-ending treaty. The Japanese were keenly interested in the events unfolding in China and hoped to avoid similar troubles. Concern for future negotiations with foreigners was elevated and held for about another decade after this report was made, only cautiously relenting when Commodore Perry arrived in Edo Bay to open trade relations with the west.
