Large and meticulously compiled album containing approximately 330 photographs of the construction and exhibits of the Pan Pacific International Exposition (P.P.I.E.) of 1915.
The title pages, P.P.I.E., 1915 and Frisco, Cal., feature large, intricately cut-out photographs die-printed in the shapes of letters and numbers; this powerful visual device sets the stage for a tour-de-force graphic presentation. The following pages with one to 13 prints per sheet of varying shapes and sizes (including tiny detailed cut-outs) depicting various aspects of the fair, from dazzling long exposures of Art. Smith and Chaz. Niles' nighttime aviation displays; to well-composed views of architectural attractions. Silver prints, the images measuring 1 1/2x 1/2 to 3 3/4x5 1/4 inches (3.8x1.2 to 9.5x13.3 cm.), mounted recto only, many with descriptive captions, in white ink, on recto, and in the negative.
