Additional Details

Property documents by African-Americans are not often seen from the 18th century. In this case, Cesar Mingo had apparently built a house on someone else's land, and here sells that house to the landowner: "Cesar Mingo, a malatto man of Dartmouth in the County of Bristol in New England, labourer, for . . . twelve pounds . . . paid by Peter Tinkham of said Dartmouth, yeoman . . . convey and confirm to him . . . a certain dwelling house in which I now live, standing on the land of the said Peter Tinkham near to his dwelling house in Dartmouth."
