(THEATRE.) Frederick O'Neal and Abram Hill (?) seated in front of Aaron Douglas's mural at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Silver print, 14 x 11 inches; a few faint wrinkles; two small closed tears to the outer margins. (New York), circa 1940-1945

Additional Details

The gentleman on the left in this photograph is actor Frederick O'Neal (Jake Walters in "Pinky," 1949), the other is most probably Abram Hill. The two founded the American Negro Theatre in 1940 to fill the void left by the demise of the WPA. They seem to be going over a script. The Theatre's first location was at the 135th Street branch of the New York Public Library, renamed the Schomburg in 1936.
