Additional Details

This volume traces the rapid end of the Capuchin mission in Spanish Guiana, now the Guayana region in the eastern part of Venezuela. The mission had been founded in 1726. During the war for Venezuelan independence, Simón Bolívar was suspicious that the Capuchins would provoke the mission Indians to fight in support of Spain. On 3 May 1817, 26 priests were killed by the revolutionary troops. The author Vich was one of the few who managed to escape to tell his story. The folding table shows the extent of these missions before their erasure. Palau 362676; Simón Palmer, Cataluña 5342. None known at auction since 1994.
