A portrait of Mary Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907), taken during her 7-year stay in Boston, where her sculptures were popular in abolitionist circles. She spent most of her later career in Rome. She was essentially the only African-American woman to make any headway into white mainstream artistic circles in the 19th century.
