Showing the scope of destruction the city of Kyoto suffered during the great Tenmei fire of 1788. The fire lasted for three days and engulfed virtually the entire city, including the Imperial Palace. The dark outline circles the area which was destroyed and the larger brown colored area indicates the likely origin of the fire. A contemporary ink annotation to the verso relates the date and occurrence of the event.
