(POSTAL COVERS.) Pair of Civil War period postal covers. One depicts Abraham Lincoln as black, with a five cent stamp, [a "London blue"] bearing the image of Jefferson Davis. The other bears the caption "The Negro Lincoln, Making Tracks from Washington"; above this is the notorious printer's slug (used universally for runaway slave ads) showing a black man running with a hobo's sack over his shoulder. Mounting traces on reverse of the "Negro Lincoln," some slight discoloration. Np, circa 1863-4
Very good examples of two rare Civil War postal covers. Both the Union and the Confederacy issued what are known as "patriotic covers," most of these showed scenes of bravery, the flag etc. However as the war progressed, both sides began to circulate covers with more hateful images and messages.
