(SLAVE DOCUMENT--JAMAICA.) "Return of Slaves in the Parish of Manchester in the Possession of William Shard as Attorney to John and Alexander Shaw . . ." Large ledger document, partially printed, and accomplished by hand. 7 large folio leaves, folded to form fourteen 4to pages, docketed on the last leaf; folded horizontally with a resulting crease throughout; some wear to the edges; signs of early stitching at the spine; outer leaves somewhat soiled; internally clean and entirely legible. [Jamaica], 1817
A list of 638 slaves; men women and children belonging to West India planters John and James Shaw. Listed by name, color, age, "African" or "Creole" (born on the island), with a column to the right for "remarks." In the "remarks" column are the names of women, and it is likely that these are the mothers of the slaves whose names appear to the left.
