Isaac Mason (1822-1898) was, like his famous contemporaries Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, born into slavery on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He escaped to Philadelphia in 1846, then made his way to Toronto and Worcester, MA, and the final chapter is devoted to an 1859 sojourn to Haiti, where he attempted to relocate before returning to Worcester.
