A portrait of the artist from the midpoint of his photographic career.

Addison Scurlock was known for photographing Washington DC's African-American community, with an emphasis on portraits of professors, government officials and ordinary citizens. Along with his sons George and Robert, Scurlock was the official photographer for Howard University. The Scurlock Studio Archive, with an estimated 200,000 photographs and 150,000 original negatives, was purchased by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.
