ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968)JAVA - CHINA - JAPAN LYN. Poster calendar. 1929. 25 1/2x18 1/2 inches, 64 3/4x47 cm. Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Rotterdam. Paper. Cassandre first played with horizon lines and vanishing points in 1927 with his posters for the Étoile du Nord and the Nord Express. Here, he applies the concept to a ship disappearing in the distance, marked more by its wake in the deepening blue ocean waves than by the vessel itself. In addition to the clever perspective, there is also a harmonious and balanced use of color and form, in which the waves, wake, sea, sky, clouds and the ship's smoke trail are all unified. Cassandre also designed the attached calendar pages; here they are in Dutch. rare. It appears in only one of the Cassandre catalogues / monographs and we could find no other copies at auction. Cassandre / Nederlandse p. 63 (var).
