AGOSTINO CARRACCI
The Crucifixion.

Engraving on 3-joined sheets of cream laid paper, 1589. 515x1195 mm; 20 3/8x47 inches (overall). Second state (of 2). With thread margins or trimmed on the plate mark. A very good impression of this scarce, monumental engraving.

According to Bohlin, this print was so popular and renowned in its day that Tintoretto (1518-1594), after whose painting in the Scuola di San Rocco, Venice, Carracci based his engraving, thought it rivaled the painting. According to Boschini, Daniel Nis took the plates to Flanders to have them gilt to prevent further deterioration from printing. Bellori contends that Tintoretto, in appreciation of the engraving, acted as godfather to Agostino's son Antonio, who was born around 1590. Bartsch 23; Bohlin 147.
