Additional Details

A very rare, impressively beautiful chart of Hawaii by Arrowsmith. As was his gift, here he advances the accuracy of former mapping of the islands based on explorers such as Cook and Vancouver. OCLC locates one copy of an 1826 edition. Not in Fitzpatrick.

Francis Post was a nineteenth century whaling captain out of New Bedford, Mass. While piloting his vessel, the Huntress, on her 1832-1836 voyage through the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the captain is known to have been in the Hawaiian Islands. While the overall condition of the chart does not immediately suggest it was actually used aboard the Huntress, Post's inscription of June 1832, two months prior to their departure in August 1832, lends some reasoning to consider the captain acquired this most accurate chart to prepare for, and consult during the voyage.
