CHARLES WHITE (1918 - 1979)

Exhibited: Charles White, Images of Dignity, Bakersfield Museum of Art, Bakersfield, CA, February 26- May 3, 2004, with the label on the backing paper.

This lot and the following lot are extremely scarce examples of oil monotype by Charles White - the first to ever to come to auction. Other known examples of these intimate portraits from this period include Kitchen Debutantes, watercolor, circa 1939, and The Mirror, oil on canvas, circa 1940. White imbues his social realism with a sophisticated expessionism. White captures a seated young woman paused with a cigarette and a drink next to an open bottle. The scene shows the talent of a young artist recording life on the South Side of Chicago during the Great Depression. Barnwell pp. 24 -25.
