DESIGNER UNKNOWN HOTEL METROPOLE / PALLANZA. 1920.

Condition A- / A: minor restoration in lower right corner; small creases at right edge. Matted and framed.
Situated in Pallanza on Lake Maggiore, in the Piedmont region of Italy's northwest, the Hotel Metropole is still in operation, albeit under a different name. Its biggest claim to fame was its inclusion in Ernest Hemingway's 1929 A Farewell to Arms, in which Henry describes his intention to go see Pallanza with Catherine, as they row to Switzerland to escape military police: 'We had planned to go to Pallanza on Lago Maggiore. It is nice there in the fall when the leaves turn' (A Farewell to Arms, p. 125). They never do see the town of Pallanza from the rowboat, because it is a dark, stormy night, but they do make a stop at the Hotel Metropole to rest (ibid. p. 245). This same image and text appeared on a luggage label as well.
