EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)
Untitled (Rhode Island Coastal Scene).

Oil on linen canvas, circa 1885-89. 305x508 mm; 12x20 inches.

Provenance: private collection, Rhode Island.

This maritime landscape is an attractive view of the Rhode Island coast where Edward M. Bannister often sketched and painted en plein air. The rocks and distant landscape along the horizon appear to be very similar to a view from Newport's cliff walk.

A detailed authentication report, dated April 29, 2017, by the art historian Anne Louise Avery, who is currently working on the first catalogue raisonné of Edward Bannister's work, will accompany the sale of this unsigned painting. Ms. Avery notes how this canvas has distinctive and characteristic elements - including the clustering of figures and the red parasol device - found in Bannister paintings, including his Bath Road Cliff, Newport, 1889, and Fort Dumpling, Jamestown, Rhode Island, circa late 1880s.
