EDWARD STEICHEN (1879-1973) Suite of 3 abstract photographs depicting seascapes. Silver prints, the images measuring 5x6 3/4 inches (12.7x17.1 cm.), and the reverse, double-mounted, the larger mounts 9 3/8x12 1/2 inches (23.9x31.8 cm.), each with Steichen's block-lettered signature and date, in Roman numerals, in ink, on print recto, and a collection label on mount verso. 1902-04
The year 1904 was a fertile period for Steichen. Returning to New York from Europe, he developed a more mature aesthetic sensibility, creating the masterful Moonrise, Mamaroneck, New York and The Flatiron Building at Night, and the moody landscape Horse-Chestnut Blossoms, Long Island, which relied on abstract elements in much the same way as these seascapes.
