THANKING FOR NEWS OF THE WAR FILLMORE, MILLARD. Autograph Letter Signed, to "My Dear Sir," thanking him for sending his son's letter with news of the movements of Generals Hood and Sherman, and praising his son. 1 page, 12mo; remnants of hinging at upper edge verso. Np, 26 October 1864

Additional Details

"I am greatly obliged for the privilege of reading your son John's letter, it gives me more information of Hood's raid and Sherman's movements than all I have been able to glean from the papers.
"I congratulate you upon having such a son, for he is an honor to your name."
At the time the present letter was written, Confederate General John Bell Hood was engaged in a campaign to disrupt the communication and supply lines of General William T. Sherman, who occupied Atlanta. Hood's Army of Tennessee moved quickly; when Sherman marched to meet him on October 13 in Resaca, GA, Hood had already departed. Despite drawing Sherman into Tennessee, the campaign was not successful in preventing Sherman from prosecuting his "March to the Sea" in November.
