HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) ARISTIDE BRUANT. Plate 7 of the Cafe Concert Portfolio. 1893.
13 1/2x10 1/2 inches.
Condition A. Paper. Hand signed and inscribed in red pencil to Bruant by Lautrec.
The years 1892 and 93 were extremely productive for Toulouse-Lautrec and he dedicated his attention towards the café-concerts and night life in Montmartre. His unique vision and artistic output were based on his completely immersing himself in the subculture. He and Henri Ibels spent countless evenings sketching the performers and habitues of the music halls (for whom many, like Jane Avril and Caudieux, he would eventually design posters). With help from Lautrec's friend André Marty (publisher of l'Estampe Original), twenty two of these images were eventually published in a portfolio. This image is an intense and vivid sketch showing the daring and insolent Bruant leaning out of the wings of a theatre. It is a richly-inked proof from the deluxe edition printed on japan paper. The image is hand-signed by Lautrec and inscribed in his hand "á Bruant, ami." An exceptional association piece. Adriani 22, Delteil 34, Wittrock 24.
