Pan-Africanist Kofi Bailey gained inspiration and motivation to create art from his social and civic involvement within the African diaspora. Bailey had close ties to political figures who fought racism and colonialism such as Kwame Nkrumah and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He lived in Ghana during the 1960s, which is where many of his artistic and cultural sensitivities were cultivated.
