Throughout the 1960s, Lawrence created images depicting to the struggle for civil rights in the United States. However, Two Rebels is the only print executed during that period that relates to that body of work. The image derives from the painting Two Rebels 1963, which depicts two men being carried by four policemen. Nesbett L63-1.
