Etching, circa 1630. 265x188 mm; 10 1/2x7 1/2 inches. Third state (of 3), with the address of Wyngaerde. Indiscernible coat-of-arms watermark. Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark. A very good impression of this extremely scarce etching.
We have found only 4 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years.
Lievens (1607-1674) and Rembrandt shared a studio space early on in their native Leyden (1626-1631), they both served apprenticeships in Amsterdam with Pieter Lastman, and during the formative years of their careers Lievens absorbed significant influence from Rembrandt, and vice versa. In some of their early work, it is difficult to ascertain the hand of one or the other, as they etched and painted so similarly. A favorite portrait theme of both artists was the orientalizing of their sitters (and themselves) adding studio props such as turbans, headdresses, robes and jewelry to give their subjects theatrical, exotic appearances.
