LÖIS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1988)
Seated Woman with Shawl.

Oil on canvas, 1937. 600x480 mm; 23 5/8x18 7/8 inches. Signed, dated and inscribed "Paris" in oil, lower right.

Provenance: Ex-collection Dr. Gloria and Frank Johnson, Washington, DC; private Maryland collection. This early portrait of an unknown sitter was made in Löis Mailou Jones's first year in Paris. Awarded a Howard University scholarship to study at the Académie Julian during 1937-38, she studied landscape and portraiture. She met the Symbolist Émile Bernard, who encouraged and befriended the young artist. The impastoed brushwork and the simplified background in this painting show the early influence of her academic training. She returned to the United States, to teach at Howard University in the fall of 1938. Tritobia Hayes Benjamin, The Life and Art of Löis Mailou Jones, p. 29.
