LOUIS J. RHEAD (1858-1926) POSTER CALENDAR. 1897.
19x13 1/2 inches. Prang & Co., Boston.
Condition B+: repaired tear through bottom margin; creases and wrinkles in margin; restoration in margins.
Taking advantage of a great artist in his employ and also taking advantage of a prevailing art trend, Prang commissioned Rhead to design at least three calendars between 1896 and 1897. In 1896 he designed the "Modern Art Calendar," and the first of his poster calendars. This image is from the following year self-referentially shows a woman flipping through the pages of this very calendar. She is surrounded by the signs of the zodiac in groups of three (the calendar, for which this is only the cover) originally contained four pages, with three months listed per page. She is also surrounded by four floral vignettes representing the seasons. Kiehl 267, DFP I 466.
