Born in Russia, Weber (1881-1961) emigrated to the United States in 1891 and settled in Brooklyn. After studying with Arthur Wesley Dow at the Pratt Institute, he spent time in Paris training at the Académie Julian from 1905-06, with Henri Matisse and Henri Laurens. By the end of the decade, he had entered the circle of Guillaume Apollinaire and Pablo Picasso, and became an early practitioner of Cubism; he was one of the main proponents of the Cubist movement among American artists during the first half of the 20th century.
