"I do not see that I could come to Lewiston this winter. As the week I come to Bangor has all its Evenings engaged. It would hardly be worth while to come down for a single Lecture as it would make my charge ($50) fifty dollars."
Phillips (1811-1884) was a lawyer and reformer, whose radical Abolitionism drove him at one point to encourage the North's secession, and who later argued for the fair treatment of Native Americans.
