RENÉ BULL. Woman in fanciful headdress. Mixed media with watercolor, gouache, graphite and collage incorporating metallic fabric, on washed vellum. 293x204 mm; 11 1/2x8 inches. Signed in ink beneath image. Archivally tipped to wooden support within a stepped matte and frame.
Bull was best known for his lush illustrations of fable and fairy tales. The grand, exotic beaded and feathered headdress on this lady is clearly influenced by his illustrations for The Rubáiyát and The Arabian Nights. Bull painted her at a 3/4 profile on paper, inlaid to size over a circle of silver metallic paper; the whole laid over burnished vellum, thus enhancing the richness and definition.
