Additional Details

Reverend Johnston (1817-1902) was the Chaplain of the British Embassy in Vienna. A prolific artist with a Hogarthian sensibility, his sketchbooks were filled with pages after pages of caricatures that directly criticized "the Emperor and his Court, high society, the bourgeoisie and the peasants, haunted, persued, and grappling with their subconscious manifestations of decay and eventual destruction." Ronald Marshall, "Drawings from the Sketchbook of the Rev. George Liddell Johnston," The Stone Gallery, 1970.
