Provenance: Phyllis Kind Gallery, New York; private collection, Georgia.

This provocative self-portrait with a nude model by Robert Colescott is a significant work on paper, and part of an important body of work by the artist on this theme. Colescott revisited the self-portrait, depicting himself in various versions of the artist and model, throughout his career - from the historical roles of Matisse in Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder, 1979, and Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise (Crow in the Wheat Field), 1981, to more personal reflections like Portrait of the Artist at 85, 1978 and Down in the Dumps, 1983. This theme also was the subject of a 1994 solo exhibition Investigations 7: Robert Colescott, The Artist and the Model at the ICA, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, June 13 – July 29, 1984.
